Choosing where to study medicine is a huge decision, and for me, Barts offered the perfect combination of academic opportunity, vibrant student life, and its history as one of the oldest medical schools in the world. Here’s a glimpse into my journey over the last four years!

Academics: Excellence and Support

The curriculum at Bart’s is challenging but rewarding. The mix of problem-based learning (PBL) with traditional lectures allowed me to understand both the theoretical and practical aspects of medicine. From anatomy sessions in the dissection lab, to hands-on clinical placements in renowned hospitals like The Royal London and St. Bartholomew’s, the learning experience was diverse and immersive. The faculty was always approachable, offering guidance and encouragement when the workload felt overwhelming. There is plenty of opportunity for group projects and discussions, as well as self-directed learning too. Within Barts, we begin our medical school journey with two years of clinical and practical skills, which prepare us for the last three years of real clinical practice on placement. This preparation and early exposure allowed me to understand the realities of a future career in medicine, as well as feeling confident about my skills in these settings.

Societies and Opportunities

Barts has an impressive variety of societies tailored to medical students, which is a fantastic way to unwind and make friends outside of lectures. From the sports teams to specialist interest groups focused on surgery, paediatrics, or global health, there’s something for everyone. These societies also opened doors to networking events and leadership opportunities, helping me grow professionally and personally. Through these societies I was also able to find like minded individuals, with similar interests outside of academics. The friends I have met have now become my greatest support system!

A Bit of History…

Studying medicine in London is an experience like no other. Barts and The London spans locations in Smithfield and Whitechapel, each with its unique charm. The Royal London Hospital, where much of our clinical training took place, is a hub of innovation and a historic landmark. The Smithfield campus, with its proximity to St. Paul’s Cathedral, blends the old and new, adding a sense of pride and tradition to daily student life. There is no better way to romanticise med school when you’re in the heart of the city surrounded by art, history and culture. As a fourth year student, with my final year approaching, the dream of graduating in St Paul’s Cathedral is closer!

As one of the oldest medical schools in the world, Barts and The London carries an unparalleled legacy. Knowing that I was part of an institution with alumni who’ve shaped medicine globally was inspiring.

Social Life: Balancing the Grind

Studying medicine is intense, but the social scene at Barts helped me find balance. Whether it was Wednesday sports nights at the famous Griff Inn Bar or exploring London’s eclectic neighbourhoods with friends on weekends, there was always something to look forward to after a long day.

Final Thoughts

My time at Barts has been transformative. It shaped not only my medical knowledge but also my character and resilience. If you’re looking for a medical school with a strong academic foundation, but also a vibrant social life, Barts might be the perfect fit for you.
